Every design industry has different software and tools that vary significantly in price. There’s always a specific company that everyone knows provides the highest quality tools that comes at a price and vice versa. When is it time for a designer to invest in high quality and high priced tools for their personal projects?

Tim starts this episode off by focusing the discussion around leatherworking tools as an example that applies to all industries and designers. He shares the different tools that he used when he first started leatherworking that received the highest customer reviews at the lowest price on Amazon. Overtime, his collection of tools began to grow and he was ready for a new tool.

Tim’s initial stitching punch to make holes for saddle stitching leather products cost $12 for a set of four and his latest stitching punch cost $140 for one. He gets into an in-depth discussion with Mike about the aesthetic and quality of the tool is worth the price. Mike talks about the longevity of a product and its durability in relation to its quality and performance. If all these factors are at the top of the scale, the tool will be worth the price.
